DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College softball team went 1-1 overall this afternoon as they hosted Heartlnad Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Mount St. Joseph at the Sal Hench Field in Defiance, Ohio. DC dropped game one 1-0 but rallied to take game two 4-3.
The Purple and Gold (14-8 overall, 2-2 HCAC) got off to a slow start in game one, recording just a handful of hits through four innings. The Lions put themselves on the board first, tallying a run in the opening inning but went on to stay silent the remainder of the contest.
Defiance came close to equalizing in the sixth as sophomore Brooke Gostomsky (Dayton/Covington) drilled a double to left field, going on to advance to third on an error but fell just short of converting. They would threaten once more in the bottom of the seventh, but, again would not score, ultimately falling 1-0 in game one.
In game two, it was the Yellow Jackets that took the early advantage. Junior Jordan Osborne (Delaware/Rutherford B. Hayes) would come home on a senior Kaity Kuhn (Celina) single before junior Michaela Bauer (Hicksville) crossed home on a Gostomsky single to left field.
MSJ countered with a lone run in the fifth but DC continued to build their lead with a two-run homerun from junior Jackie Hartman (Parma/Padua Franciscan) to put Defiance up 4-1 in the sixth inning. The Lions would not surrender without a fight, however, recording a pair of runs in the final inning to close the gap 4-3. With bases loaded, junior Jamie Kimbler (Huber Heights/Wayne) would seal the victory with two strikeouts and pop-fly to put the Yellow Jackets at 14-8 on the season, 2-2 in conference play.
The Purple and Gold are back in action on Wednesday, April 11 as they travel to Manchester University in North Manchester, Indiana. The first game of the doubleheader will start at 3:30 PM.
