Defiance Falls Short Against Montclair St., Rebounds With 7-3 Win Over Penn St.-Berks

KISSIMMEE, Florida. – The Defiance College softball team split games this afternoon, dropping their first game 4-0 against Montclair State University before nabbing game two with Penn State-Berks, 7-3.
The Red Hawks came out swinging against the Purple and Gold in the early game, opening the scoring with one run off three hits in the bottom of the second inning. They continued to swing the bat well, earning three more runs off four hits in the following inning to extend their lead to 4-0.
In the top of the sixth, Defiance attempted to stage a comeback, getting batters on first and second base but would fail to bring runners home. The Yellow Jackets added a final hit in the seventh inning as Jen Nashalsky singled to left field before falling 4-0 to Montclair State.
In game two, DC picked it back up, winning 7-3 over the Penn State-Berks Nittay Lions. Defiance took the quick lead on a Mariah Huff RBI single to right field that scored Kaity Kuhn. After a quiet second inning from both teams, Defiance went back to work, adding two more runs in the third. Emma Perry's RBI to center field pushed Brooke Gostomsky home before Richards stepped up to the plate, blasting a single to bring around Perry.
Finally after three scoreless innings, PSU-Berks put a pair of runs on the board followed by an additional run in the fifth only to be answered by the Yellow Jacket offense with three unanswered runs. Haley Patty crushed a fifth-inning RBI double to left field line, sending Jackie Hartman to the dish before Hartman drilled a double herself in the following inning, scoring Jessica Mello and Brooke Gostomsky to seal the contest 7-3.
The Yellow Jackets are back on the field tomorrow, Friday, March 9, as they wrap up their time in Florida with Muhlenberg at 9:00 AM and Muskingum at 1:30 PM.
