GREENWOOD, IND. -- Defiance College freshman softball player Brooke Gostomsky (Covington) and junior men's golfer Alex Miday (Canton/St. Thomas) have been named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Players of the Week in their respective sports.
Gostomsky was named the HCAC "Hitter of the Week" after helping lead the Yellow Jacket softball team to a 7-1 record this past week. Gostomsky played in seven of those games, including starting in six, and batted an impressive .524 at the plate (11-of-21). She also hit a pair of home runs to go along with two doubles, eight runs scored and nine RBI. Gostomsky finished the week with a .565 on-base percentage and a .905 slugging percentage.
Gostomsky had four multi-hit games during the week, including a three-for-three effort against Rose-Hulman (Ind.) in the first game of the doubleheader in which she also scored a pair of runs and had four RBI. She went two-of-four in game two in addition to a run and RBI to end the overall day, five-of-seven with three runs scored and five RBI.
Defiance will host Anderson (Ind.) University in a HCAC doubleheader on Wednesday, Apr. 26 at Sal Hench Field. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
Miday capped an impressive performance for the men's golf team by finishing as medalist at the annual Defiance Spring Invitational over the weekend. As a team, the Jackets shot a second-round total of 295 strokes and improved by 17 strokes from day one to better their sixth-place standing to third overall.
Individually, Miday shot a one-under par (69) on the final day to end the two-day event with a total of 141 strokes (72+69=141) to finish the tournament with the lowest score out of a field of 73 golfers. It marks the fifth time in his collegiate career that he has earned medalist honors, including the HCAC Individual Championship last spring. It is also Miday's third medalist honor this year having finished in first place twice during the fall schedule.
The Defiance men's golf team will begin the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship next weekend (Apr. 29-30) with the first two rounds. Mount St. Joseph University will serve as host with both rounds being played at Miami-Whitewater Forest Golf Course in Cincinnati, Ohio.
