LEXINGTON, KY. – The Yellow Jacket softball team dropped two games to Transylvania (Ky.) University, 2-0 and 4-2, in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play in Lexington, Ky.
In game one, DC (4-10, 0-2 HCAC) threatened several times against Transy (6-7, 2-0 HCAC), but could never find the big hit it needed as the Yellow Jackets fell 2-0. In the second inning, sophomore Megan Warren (Mason) started things off with a walk. Freshman Haley Patty (Bradford) would bunt Warren to second, but made it safely to first in the process. Freshman Calli Bauer (Galion) then did her job and got the runners to scoring position with just one away. The Yellow Jackets couldn't find a run though as they went quietly the rest of the inning. Senior Brittany Shough (DeGraff/Riverside) got into scoring position the next inning with just one out, but again DC couldn't get her in. Freshman Kaity Kuhn (Celina) singled and stole second in the sixth, but that would be the last threat for DC as it was shutout 2-0.
Kuhn, Patty, Bauer, and Shough would all single for DC's four hits in game one.
In the circle, Sarah Kaya (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview) pitched six strong innings. She allowed just one earned run on six hits. She also struck out four Transy batters.
The Yellow Jackets scored a couple in the second game, but Transy scored four to sweep the doubleheader. Freshman Brianna Caldwell (Marion/Elgin) started out the second game with a single to the left. Warren later doubled her in with a shot to left center to give DC the early 1-0 lead. Transy tied things up in the bottom of the inning with a run of its own. Kuhn started out the third inning with a single to right center. She advanced to second on Warren's at-bat. Bauer singled to right field to score Kuhn to take the 2-1 lead. Transy then scored three unaswered runs in the next three innings to build the 4-2 lead. sophomore Emily Denhard (Troy, Mich./Kolbe Academy) threatened the Transy defense in the top of the last inning. She would pinch run for junior Makayla McAvoy (Mt. Gilead) who singled to start out the seventh. Denhard advanced to second on a fielder's choice and then advanced to third on another fielder's choice. That is where she would stay though as the Yellow Jackets dropped game two, 4-2.
Caldwell, Kuhn, Warren, Bauer, and McAvoy all had a hit to total DC's hits at five. Warren and Bauer both had a RBI. Caldwell and Kuhn scored the two DC runs.
Patty was in the circle for game two for DC. She allowed two earned runs in 4.1 innings of pitching. Bauer allowed another earned run in an inning of pitching.
DC will take back to the road on Monday, Mar. 23. The Yellow Jackets will head to Adrian, Mich. for a doubleheader against Adrian (Mich.) College. Game one's first pitch is set to be thrown at 3:30 pm.
