DEFIANCE, Ohio - Kailea Holbrook pitched a two-hitter as part of a complete game shutout Saturday afternoon, helping the Yellow Jackets to a doubleheader split against Mount St. Joseph at Sal Hench Field.
Holbrook scattered the Lions two hits and Megan Warren's sacrifice fly in the first inning was all the Yellow Jackets needed to pull a 1-0 victory in the first game of the day.
MSJ used a walk and a bunt hit in the first inning to put Holbrook and DC in a jam, but the Yellow Jackets got out of the top of the first and the momentum helped DC to play small ball en route to scoring the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.
Emily Denhard reached with a single to lead off the bottom of the first. Denhard used her speed to advance all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Macy Ferrall that was dropped and allowed DC to have runners on the corners with no outs.
After Kali Campbell used a sacrifice bunt to move Ferrall to second, Warren hit a deep fly to center field, allowing Denhard to go the final 60 feet for what turned into the winning run in the game.
Holbrook limited MSJ's offense to one base runner in three of the innings and the Lions also went three-and-out three more times in the game.
The Yellow Jackets had two more chances to score, getting a pair of hits in the second and two more hits in the fourth, but DC could not get the timely hit, stranding both base runners in each inning.
In game two, Defiance tied the game at one in the bottom of the second. Warren was on the scoring end of the play, as Brittany Shough hit a double to right center.
However, the Lions answered back and scored two runs in the top of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. Defiance was unable to answer back, scattering hits over the final innings without getting a runner past second base.
Defiance will return to the field Sunday with a double header against Denison set for 1 p.m. at Sal Hench Field.
