DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Yellow Jackets came up short against a red-hot Anderson University squad on Saturday. Defiance fell, 6-3, in the first contest and 5-3 in game two to drop into a tie for fourth place in the conference standings with a 2-2 record against HCAC opponents.
Anderson started game one with back-to-back singles and plated two runs in the opening frame off RBI's from Katy Ogden and Lauren Smith. The Raven's 2-0 lead remained intact until the sixth inning, when they tacked on two more runs to open up a 4-0 advantage. Defiance responded in the bottom of the frame, when Marah Robinson, Katie Miller and Kaycee Butt each reached base safely to start the inning, loading the bases for Elizabeth Huffman. Huffman smacked a double into the left-center field wall, clearing the bases to cut DC's deficit to one run.
AU's Lauren Smith tagged a homerun down the right field line to start the seventh inning, and the Ravens proceeded to score two runs on four hits in the inning to extend their lead back to three. Defiance was unable to produce any runs in the bottom of the frame, and Shauna Bowes was hit with the loss to drop below .500 for the season.
Defiance claimed an early lead in game two, when Mallory Faling hit a one-out double to right-center field, and Miller followed with a shot that sailed just inside the left foul pole to put DC ahead, 2-0. After a scoreless second inning, Anderson got on the board with a pair of runs to knot the score at two runs apiece in the third. Defiance got out of a jam later in the inning, when Tasha Stucke fielded a well-struck ground ball and flipped it to second base for the final out, leaving three runners stranded.
The Ravens took the lead with an unanswered run in the top of the fifth and another in the top of the sixth. Defiance left two runners on in the sixth inning, and one in the seventh as the Ravens pulled away with the 5-3 victory, dropping the Jackets to 6-6 at Sal Hench Field.
The Yellow Jackets will look to rebound on Wednesday, when they head to Bluffton for a doubleheader with the Beavers (13-12; 5-3 HCAC). Game one is set for 3:30 p.m.
