DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance and Olivet split, 1-1, in a high-scoring doubleheader that featured a combined 30 runs between the two squads. Two of the runs were recorded by Marah Robinson, making the senior centerfielder the all-time runs leader in Defiance College softball history.
Robinson's record-breaking run came in the fourth inning of game two, when she led off with a single up the middle and came around to score on an RBI single from Elizabeth Huffman. Defiance was trailing, 3-0, at the time, before Robinson's run cut the deficit to two.
The Jackets cut Olivet's lead to one run in the fifth inning, as Tasha Stucke led off with a single and came in on a sacrifice fly to center field from Kaycee Butt. Olivet answered with another run in the top of the sixth, however, and Defiance was once again trailing by two with two innings remaining.
Defiance didn't need two innings to catch up, however, as the Jackets exploded with eight runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth. Huffman and Macy Ferrall got things going with a pair of walks, and Stephanie Esquibel followed with a single to load the bases. Designated player, Aubrie Ridinger, was next in the lineup, and came through with a shot through the ride side that brought in two runs and tied the game at four runs apiece.
Following a pitching change by the Comets, Tasha Stucke singled, Katie Miller walked, Butt singled and Robinson ripped a two-run shot down the left field line. Robinson advanced to third on a single from Mallory Faling, and Huffman brought her home with a sacrifice fly to center field, giving the Jackets a 10-4 lead while sending Robinson across home plate safely for the 96th time in her career.
Kelly Schnipke picked up the win for Defiance with her second complete-game victory in as many days.
The Yellow Jackets (7-7) will continue their home stand with a doubleheader against Heidelberg University (8-2) on Wednesday, March 23, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
