DEFIANCE, Ohio – The DC softball team came up with two crucial wins against Hanover College on Friday evening, beating the Panthers 9-5 in the first contest and 7-1 in the nightcap. The two victories move the Jackets to 4-4 in HCAC play, and into a tie for fourth place in the conference with Anderson University.
Hanover's Lauren Kreinest got things going in the top of the first with a two-run homer to left field, but DC's Marah Robinson matched Kreinest with a two-run home run of her own in the bottom half of the inning, to tie the game, 2-2, at the end of the first.
Defiance plated two more runs in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a couple of errors by the Panthers to stretch the lead to two runs, before DC's starting pitcher, Brittany Gow, ripped a double down the left field line in the third inning to make it a 5-2 game.
The Yellow Jackets would go on to score two more runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, and went into the seventh inning with a seven-run cushion. Hanover's Blakli Nading made things interesting with a three-run shot that rode the wind over the left field wall to cut the lead to four, but that was as close as the Panthers would get. Gow got the next batter to ground out to the shortstop, securing her fifth win of the season.
Defiance's Kelly Schnipke toed the rubber for the Jackets in the second contest, and picked up the complete game victory, holding Hanover to just one run in seven innings. After going scoreless in the first inning, DC's offense found its rhythm, posting at least one run in each of its last five innings.
DC's Marah Robinson, Kaycee Butt and Tasha Stucke were all outstanding at the plate for Defiance, combining to post 10 hits in 11 at bats in the game, including two RBI apiece. The 10 hits between the three players accounted for all but one of DC's 11 hits in the game.
The softball team is set to host Denison University (14-10) at Sal Hench Field on Tuesday, April 13, in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
