ADA, OHIO -- The Defiance College men's track and field team competed in the Joe Banks Invitational at Ohio Northern University on Saturday and placed in the 13th position as a team with 12 points.
The majority of those points came from the men's weight throw, where senior Joshua Petro (Ocala, Fla./The Villages) placed second overall with a best throw of 17.26 meters (56 feet, 7.5 inches). Junior Javier Castillo (Nogales, Ariz./Nogales) also earned three points by placing in the sixth spot with a season-best throw of 15.14 meters (49 feet, 8.25 inches). Rounding out the top 10 in the event was junior Andrew Fahler (Wellington) with a throw of 14.22 meters (46 feet, 8 inches). Junior Justin Bergquist (Cincinnati/Northwest) also placed 14th overall in the 41-man field.
Petro was just shy of a points-scoring position in the shot put with his throw of 13.44 meters (44 feet, 1.25 inches), which was good enough for the ninth spot. Castillo followed closely behind in 12th with a toss of 13.01 meters (42 feet, 8.25 inches). Junior James Baranoski Jr. (Bloomingdale, Mich.) and Bergquist placed 18th and 20th, respectively in the 36-man field.
In the long jump, freshman Vince Jackson (Mason) was just outside the top 10, as his leap of 5.97 meters (19 feet, 7 inches) was good enough for the 11th position. Freshman Cody Drumm-Turner (Homer, Mich.) placed 17th.
The top finisher in the running events for the Yellow Jackets was freshman Gabriel Caris (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford), as his 53.40 time in the 400-meter dash gave him an 11th-place finish out of 22 competitors.
A pair of Defiance sprinters also placed in the top half of the field in the 60-meter dash, as Drumm-Turner and freshman Maurice Brewer (Monticello, Ark./Drew Central) finished in the 16th and 18th positions overall with times of 7.42 and 7.47, respectively.
The Defiance track athletes will return to action on Friday, Feb. 9 as they host the Dick Small Invitational at the George M. Smart Center. The meet is set to begin at 4 p.m.
