Postema Back at it with Hammer, Discus, and Shot Wins at MSJ

III Indoor All-American Tom Postema picked up right where he left off, as he led DC to a second-place finish at the Mount St. Joseph Invitational on Friday, March 22. The senior thrower took first in the hammer, discus and shot put with marks that rank in the top-10 of the country.

Being the first outdoor meet of the season for the Yellow Jackets, Postema enjoyed the outside air and dominated at the meet. The Defiance, Ohio, native recorded distances of 62.19 meters (hammer), 53.30 m (discus) and 15.70 m (shot put). His tosses currently rank first, third and fourth nationally in all of NCAA division III, along with being first in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Postema's hammer throw mark also ranks eighth best in all divisions and was a new school record, as he bested Trevor Matuszak's 2008 throw by over seven feet.
On the track, the Yellow Jackets distance runners had a strong outing. Junior Joe Davis took the top spot in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:54.74, which was 16 seconds faster than the second-place runner. Then in the 1,500-meter run, DC dominated by taking three of the top four spots. Senior Hayden Krick finished first with a mark of 4:10.31. Right behind him, junior Madison Murphy crossed the finish line in 4:14.97 and sophomore Troy Parrett placed fourth at 4:15.98.
Others showing well at the first outdoor meet of the season were sophomore Ryan Johnston and juniors Adam Grillot and Anthony Nolfi. In the pole vault, Johnston notched first place with a height of 3.65 meters. Grillot competed in the 800-meter run and clocked a time of 2:04.23 for third. Finally, in a strong overall performance, Nolfi went third in the javelin (43.68 meters) and fourth in both the hammer (46.13 m) and discus (39.24 m).
For team results, Notre Dame (Ohio) took first with 128 points at the meet. The Purple and Gold scored 104 for the second spot and Thomas More rounded out the top-3 with 89 points.
The Yellow Jacket track and field team will return home to host the annual Dick Small Invitational next Friday, March 29. Action at the meet will begin at 11 a.m. out at the Justin F. Coressel Stadium.
