Men's Tennis Drops Regular-Season Finale Against Hanover
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- The Defiance College men's tennis team was beaten by Hanover (Ind.) College, 9-0, in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and regular-season finale at the Indianapolis Racquet Club in Indianapolis, Ind.
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- The Defiance College men's tennis team was beaten by Hanover (Ind.) College, 9-0, in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and regular-season finale at the Indianapolis Racquet Club in Indianapolis, Ind.
Hanover began the match with three victories in doubles action to grab an early lead. Seniors James DeMeo (Oregon/Clay) and Tory Savage (Byan) teammed up at first doubles and won four games, but would fall in the overall match by the final of 8-4.
Senior Daniel Fabelo (Hamilton/Badin) and junior Adam Swisher (Bedford, Mich./Bedford) captured three games in their matchup at second doubles, but would fall by the final of 8-3.
Junior Eline Widman (Tiffin/Tiffin Columbian) and senior Brian Kurtz (Sandusky/Perkins) completed the doubles matches for DC with an 8-2 final at third doubles that went in favor of the Panthers.
The Panthers continued their momentum into the singles matches, sweeping all six matchups. Swisher played the closest match of the six, winning a combined six games. The outcome of the match went of favor of Hanover, however, with the scores of 6-2 and 6-4.
DeMeo played at first singles and captured three games total, fallng by the scores of 6-2 and 6-1. Savage and Widman posted identical scores at third and fourth singles with each set being decided by the finals of 6-1 and 6-1.
Senior Nathan Height (Wabash, Ind./Wabash) and Kurtz played at fifth and sixth singles, capturing one game each. Height captured his only game of the match during the first set with the final scores of 6-1 and 6-0. Kurtz dropped his first set, 6-0, and then won a game in the second set, but fell, 6-1, overall.
The Jackets will be the sixth seed in next week's HCAC Tournament that begins on Friday, May 5 at the West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis, Ind. Defiance will take on the third-seeded team.
