DeMeo Breaks All-Time Wins Record at Anderson (Ind.)
ANDERSON, IND. -- Senior James DeMeo (Oregon/Clay) broke the men's tennis all-time wins record at Anderson (Ind,) University winning both his doubles and singles matchups to get his 106th and 107th career victories.
ANDERSON, IND. -- Senior James DeMeo (Oregon/Clay) broke the men's tennis all-time wins record at Anderson (Ind,) University winning both his doubles and singles matchups to get his 106th and 107th career victories. Defiance ended up losing the competition 5-4, playing close matches all afternoon.
DeMeo recorded his record-setting victory in his doubles competition with senior partner Tory Savage (Byan). They only allowed three games against, winning 8-3.
The remaining doubles matches were both won by Anderson. Senior Daniel Fabelo (Hamilton/Badin) and junior Adam Swisher (Bedford, Mich./Bedford) captured a game in their matchup at second doubles, but would fall overall, 8-1. Junior Eline Widman (Tiffin/Tiffin Columbian) and senior Brian Kurtz (Sandusky/Perkins) played a very close match at third doubles. The duo forced their opponents to go the distance and needed extra games to decide the outcome with the Ravens eventually prevailing, 9-7.
Trailing, 3-1, going into the singles competition, the Jackets won three of the six matches. DeMeo continued his winning ways at first singles with winning scores of 6-3 and 6-3. Swisher played at second singles and took the match in straight sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-3.
Widman recorded the other singles victory for the Jackets at fourth singles in three sets. Widman took the first set, 6-4, but his opponent evened the match by winning the second set, 6-4. The third set saw Widman post a convincing win with a 6-2 outcome to take the overall match.
The remaining three singles competitions all went into a third set to decide the outcome. At third singles, Savage fell in the first set 6-2, and was able to fight back to win the second set, 6-4. In the third set, Savage captured two games, but his opponent would come out on top, 6-2.
Kurtz started out his matchup at fifth singles with a 6-3 loss, but then outlasted his opponent in set two, 6-4, to even the match at 1-1. The third set was a repeat of the first set with Anderson taking the set, 6-3, and the match.
Nathan Height (Wabash, Ind./Wabash) rounded out the singles matches at sixth singles and began the match with a 6-4 loss in set one, but then took set two, 6-4. Height won three games in the final set, but would drop the set, 6-3, as his opponent came away with a 2-1 victory.
The Jackets will return to play in their final match of the regular season on Saturday, Apr. 29 in Hanover, Ind. as they take on conference foe Hanover (Ind.) College. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
