DEFIANCE, OHIO -- Senior James DeMeo (Oregon/Clay) tied the most career wins in Defiance men's tennis history at 105 victories today against Concorida (Mich.) University. The Yellow Jackets lost the overall match, 6-3.
DeMeo recorded his record-tying win in singles action despite falling behind in the match after a 6-2 first-set loss. He then came back to win the second set, 7-5, and even the match at a set apiece. The match was determined with a third-set tiebreaker where DeMeo prevailed, 10-8, for win 105.
Defiance went on win two other singles matches at the third and fourth spots. Junior Eline Widman (Tiffin/Tiffin Columbian) captured the first set of his match via a tiebreaker, 7-6, to jump ahead 1-0. After falling in set two, 6-1, to even the match, Widman won the decisive set, 10-8, in a pro-set format.
The other DC singles win was turned in by senior Brian Kurtz (Sandusky/Perkins) at fourth singles and would also need all three sets to decide a winner. The match began with Kurtz claiming the first set by a convincing 6-1 final. His opponent took the second set, but needed extra games to do so, 7-5. Kurtz then won the match in the third set, 10-5.
In doubles, the Jackets fell behind, 3-0, as Concordia claimed all three matchups. The closest match was turned in by Widman and Kurtz in back-and-forth action at second doubles. The match would be decided by a tiebreaker, but the duo ultimately came out on the losing end of a 7-6 (7-2) decision.
DeMeo and senior Tory Savage (Bryan) combined efforts and also played a contested match at first doubles. They took four games against their opponents, but it would not be enough as they would fall by the final of 6-4.
Seniors Daniel Fabelo (Hamilton/Badin) and Nathan Height (Wabash, Ind./Wabash) rounded out the doubles action at third doubles where they won a pair of games in a 6-2 loss.
They Yellow Jackets will return to play tomorrow (Wednesday, Apr. 26) when they travel to Anderson, Ind. to take on Anderson University in a HCAC matchup. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
