Men's Tennis Shuts Out Transylvania
DEFIANCE, OHIO -- The Defiance College men's tennis team concluded their three-game home span with a 9-0 win against Transylvania (Ky.) University in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup.
DEFIANCE, OHIO -- The Defiance College men's tennis team concluded their three-game home span with a 9-0 win against Transylvania (Ky.) University in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup.
The Yellow Jackets captured all three doubles wins including one of the matches by default. Senior James DeMeo (Oregon) and junior Adam Swisher (Bedford, Mich./Bedford) had a quick win defeating their opponents by the final of 8-1. Senior Tory Savage (Bryan) and junior Eline Widman (Tiffin/Tiffin Columbian) combined efforts at second doubles and also posted a convincing win by a final of 8-3.
The team of seniors Brian Kurtz (Sandusky/Perkins) and Daniel Fabelo (Hamilton/Badin) got a default victory at third doubles to complete the sweep for the team.
In the singles competition, DC won all six matches with the final two matches also being won by default. Swisher and Savage played the second and third singles, both with identical scores. They won 6-1 the first set and then blanked their opponents, 6-0, in the second set.
Widman played in the fourth singles spot and allowed just two games against in the first set, winning 6-2. He then posted a shutout to capture the second set, 6-0, to claim the 2-0 match win.
At first singles, DeMeo played the closest match of the day which began with a 7-5 victory in the first set. The second set saw more of a one-sided win for DeMeo as he beat his opponent, 6-2, to complete the overall win.
The final two matches were both won out of default as the Yellow Jackets claimed the 9-0 match shut out.
The team will resume play on Wednesday, Apr. 19 in Richmond, Ind. as they take on Earlham (Ind.) College in a HCAC contest. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
