Men's Tennis Gets Close Win Against MSJ
CINCINNATI, OHIO -- The Defiance College men's tennis team moved above the .500 mark with a 5-4 victory against Mount St. Joseph University in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener.
CINCINNATI, OHIO -- The Defiance College men's tennis team moved above the .500 mark with a 5-4 victory against Mount St. Joseph University in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener.
In the doubles competition, the Yellow Jackets dominated over MSJ, winning two of three matches to put Defiance on top 2-1.
Senior James DeMeo (Oregon) and junior Adam Swisher (Bedford, Mich./Bedford) teamed up at first doubles and held their opponents to two points, winning 8-2. Also pulling out a win was the duo of junior Eline Widman and senior Brian Kurtz (Sandusky/Perkins) at third doubles, 8-4. The senior duo of Tory Savage (Bryan) and Daniel Fabelo (Hamilton/Badin) lost a tough fight at second doubles, 8-5.
DeMeo and Swisher continued their momentum into the singles matches, both capturing their respective matchups at first and second singles. Both players also won in straight sets with DeMeo winning 6-1 and 6-2. Swisher defeated his opponent by the scores of 6-2 and 6-1.
Despite losing his first set, 6-4, in his fifth singles match, Kurtz rallied with victories in the second and third sets, winning both by the final score of 6-3.
In the remaining singles matches, Savage tooke an early lead in his matchup at third singles with a 6-2 first set win. But his MSJ opponent pulled off the comeback win with victories in the second and third sets by the final of 6-4 in both sets.
Widman also won the first set of his fourth singles match, 6-2, but would fall in a pair of close final sets losing 6-4 and 7-5. Height took two games in both sets of his sixth singles matchup, but came out on the losing end, 6-2 and 6-2.
Defiance will return to play tomorrow (Sunday, Apr. 9) when they host HCAC opponent Franklin (Ind.) College at the Dix Tennis Courts at 11 a.m.
