DC Win Streak Grows to Three With Win Against Bethany
MARIETTA, OHIO -- The Defiance College men's tennis team increased its current win streak to three matches with a 7-2 victory against Bethany (W.Va.) College on the first day of the Beren Invitational hosted by Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio.

Defiance (5-5) took an early command of the overall match by winning all three of the doubles matches for a 3-0 lead. Senior James DeMeo (Oregon) and junior Adam Swisher (Bedford, Mich./Bedford) teamed up at first doubles and "doubled-up" their opponents with a final score of 8-4. The team of junior Eline Widman and senior Nathan Height (Wabash, Ind./Wabash) had the closest match of the three at third doubles, but managed to come out on top, winning 8-6. The senior duo of Tory Savage (Bryan) and Daniel Fabelo (Hamilton/Badin) played at second doubles and held their opponents scoreless, winning 8-0.
In singles action, DeMeo needed an extra game in the first set to grab a 7-5 win. He also posted a two-game victory in the second set going on to win by the final of 6-4. At second singles, Swisher fell behind dropping the first set, 7-5, but then rallied in set two with a final of 6-2. The match was decided in a pro set with Swisher coming out ahead, 10-4, to seal the victory for DC.
The final three singles matches were played as single pro-sets with Widman and senior Brian Kurtz (Sandusky) both posting victories. Widman captured his fourth-singles match by the final of 8-0, and Kurtz defeated his opponent at fifth singles with the final of 8-2.
The team will return to play tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 24 when they continue play at the Beren Invitational. The Jackets will take on Thomas (Ky.) More College at 10:30 a.m. and will play again later in the day depending upon the outcome of their match against the Saints.
