Jackets Fire Up Against Comets for Win

DEFIANCE, OHIO -- The Defiance College men's tennis team hosted Olivet (Mich.) College in a non-conference matchup at the George M. Smart Center and defeated the Comets, 9-0.
In the doubles competition, the Yellow Jackets dominated over Olivet, winning all three matches to put Defiance on top 3-0. Senior James DeMeo (Oregon) and junior Adam Swisher (Bedford, Mich./Bedford) teamed up at first doubles and held their opponents scoreless, 8-0. Also holding their opponents scoreless was the duo of junior Eline Widman and senior Brian Kurtz (Sandusky/Perkins) at third doubles, 8-0. The senior duo of Tory Savage (Bryan) and Daniel Fabelo (Hamilton/Badin) played the second doubles and held their opponent to only one point overall. They left the court with an 8-1 win.
The singles competition mirrored the doubles with the Jackets continuing to dominate over the Comets. Kurtz won both sets in shutout fashion at fifth singles winning by indentical scores of 6-0 in both sets. Playing at second singles, Swisher held his opponent scoreless in both sets, 6-0 and 6-0.
DeMeo played in the first singles spot winning his first set in a shutout, 6-0. His opponent put up a fight the second set, capturing one of the points, with DeMeo winning 6-1 overall. In the sixth singles match, senior Nathan Height (Wabash, Ind./Wabash) cruised to a 6-0 win in the first set and then continued the momentum in the second set, dropping just one game and coming out on top with a 6-1 win overall.
Savage won both of his sets at third singles by the scores of 6-1 and 6-1. Widman, playing in the fourth singles, continued the trend of shutting out his opponent with a 6-0 victory in the first set. His second set was the closest set of the day, with Widman coming back from a 1-0 deficit, but closed out the match with a 6-3 victory.
The team will return to play this Friday-Saturday, Mar. 24-25 when they travel to Marietta, Ohio to take part in the Beren Invitational at the Beren Tennis Center. The Jackets will take on Bethany (W. Va.) College on Friday with the match scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
