Men's Tennis Defeated By Alma
DEFIANCE, OHIO- The Defiance College men's tennis team hosted Alma (Mich.) College in a non-conference match-up, but fell to the Scots, 6-3, at the George M. Smart Center.
DEFIANCE, OHIO- The Defiance College men's tennis team hosted Alma (Mich.) College in a non-conference match-up, but fell to the Scots, 6-3, at the George M. Smart Center.
In doubles action, Defiance (1-2) caputred one of the three possible points thanks to senior James DeMeo (Oregon/Clay) and junior Andy Swisher (Bedford, Mich./Bedford) who won their match, 8-5, at first doubles. The remaining points were both captured by Alma (2-4), 8-0 and 8-2.
The duo of junior Eline Widman (Tiffin/Tiffin Colombian) and senior Daniel Fabelo (Hamilton/Badin) took two points in their third doubles match, but would fall overall by the final of 8-2.
DC took two match points in singles play with DeMeo and Swisher who won their respective matches at first and second singles. DeMeo battled back from a 0-1 start in his singles match after dropping the first set, 6-2. He then flew through his final two sets, 6-2 and 6-1, for the match win.
Swisher fought hard for two sets to earn his win in a heavily contested match. He prevailed in the first set, 6-4, and the second set would need a tiebreaker to decide the winner with Swisher coming out on top, 7-6 (7-5).
Savage played in the third singles competition, and scored four points overall, between both sets. He fell short the first set 6-3, and 6-1 in the second set. Widman took three points in the first set of his fourth singles series, but would fall in the overall match, 6-3 and 6-0. Senior Brian Kurtz (Sandusky/Perkins) lost the fifth singles competition 6-0 in both sets. Senior Nathan Height (Wabash, Ind./Wabash) rounded out the singles competitors for the Jackets. He played a close first set, but would be edged out by his Alma opponent, 6-4. He then fell in the second set 6-0.
The Jackets will travel south for their annual spring training trip to Hilton Head, S.C. for the Spring Tennis Fest. Defiance will begin play on Saturday, Mar. 4 against Salem (W. Va.) International University. The start time has yet to be determined.
