Defiance Plays Three in Hilton Head
HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Defiance College men’s tennis team played three matches in Hilton Head, S.C. and finished the day 1-2, after falling to Lawrence (Mich.) Tech and Penn-State Behrend but ending the day victorious over Marietta.
HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Defiance College men's tennis team played three matches in Hilton Head, S.C. and finished the day 1-2, after falling to Lawrence (Mich.) Tech and Penn-State Behrend but ending the day victorious over Marietta.
In the first match, Lawrence (Mich.) Tech (9-1) took an early 3-0 lead over Defiance (3-4) after sweeping all three double matchups. The second doubles team of junior Tory Savage (Bryan) and sophomore Eline Widman (Tiffin/Tiffin Columbian) had the closest doubles match for the morning by working their opponent to an 8-2 loss.
In singles play, the Blue Devils managed to defeat the Yellow Jackets in all six singles slots to take the overall match by a score of 9-0.
In the second match, the Yellow Jackets fought to a tough 5-4 decision against the Lions (7-4). The first doubles team of junior James Demeo (Oregon/Clay) and sophomore Adam Swisher (Bedford, Mich. /Bedford) won 9-8 (7-3). Savage and Widman defeated their opponent 8-2 at the second doubles slot.
In singles play, Swisher and Widman came up victorious in the second and fourth singles spots, respectively.
In the final match of the day, the Yellow Jackets ended on a high note by narrowly escaping the Pioneers (3-6) by a match score of 5-4. Victories came from first double team of Demeo and Swisher, second doubles squad of Savage and Widman, and the first three singles positions which included Demeo, Swisher and Savage.
The Yellow Jackets will continue their stay in Hilton Head, S.C. with a match against Eastern (Pa.) Nazarene University on Friday, Mar. 11. The first serve is set for noon.
