Defiance Sweeps Anderson (Ind.)

ANDERSON, IND.  –-  Coming off its first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference loss, the Defiance College men's tennis team traveled to Anderson, Ind. to take on the Anderson University Ravens in hopes of rebounding with a victory.  The Yellow Jackets got exactly what they were looking for and then some by sweeping the Ravens 9-0 to hold onto its second place standing in the conference.

Once again, DC (9-5, 4-1 HCAC) got off to an early advantage in doubles. The 3-0 lead was highlighted at the second doubles position as senior Ryan Nelson (Oregon/Clay) and sophomore James DeMeo (Oregon/Clay) swept their opponents 8-0 to move their record to 5-2 (4-1 HCAC). Both the number one duo of seniors Mike Ross (Bryan) and Justin Walker (Wilson, N.C. /Hunt) and third doubles, sophomore Tory Savage (Bryan) and freshman Adam Swisher (Bedford, Mich. /Bedford) won their contests by scores of 8-3. Ross and Walker improve their record to 8-6 (4-1 HCAC) while Savage and Swisher move to 3-4 (1-4 HCAC).

Swisher (9-5, 4-1 HCAC) led the surge in singles with a 6-0, 6-0, sweep at the six slot. Ross (6-7, 3-2 HCAC) and Nelson (9-3, 4-1 HCAC) emulated each other with a pair of 6-1, 6-0, decisions at the number one and three positions. A 6-2, 6-0, final at second singles proved to be enough for DeMeo to advance his record to 8-5 (4-1 HCAC). Savage took care of his fifth singles rival with a 6-1, 6-3, decision. Savage's record now stands at 7-6 (3-2 HCAC) after the victory. In the toughest contest on the night, Walker came out on top 6-4, 6-4, at fourth singles to improve his record to 8-5 (3-2 HCAC).

The next outing for the Yellow Jackets is set for this Saturday, April 18 as the team heads south to take on HCAC foe Hanover (Ind.) College. The match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
