N. MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Defiance College men's tennis team traveled to Manchester University on Monday afternoon for a makeup match that got cancelled last week due to weather. The Jackets escaped its second conference match of the season in a 5-4 win.
The Purple and Gold was able to win two-of-three doubles matches to grab an early advantage. Craig Bills and Mike Ross toughed out a 9-7 victory at the two position and the three doubles team of Michael Vanderkolk and Justin Walker cruised to a comfortable 8-3 win.
After taking two doubles matches the Jackets just needed to split the singles action 3-3 to grab the win, and that is just what the team managed to achieve. DC was victorious at the two, three and four matches to secure the win.
The single winners for Defiance were Cord Speelman, Craig Bills and Justin Walker. All three athletes won with ease, as each player won in straight-sets and none gave up more than six games in the victory.
Defiance moves to 2-4 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and 6-10 for the season. The Yellow Jackets return to DC on Tuesday, April 23, as the team hosts Anderson in a home conference showdown that could dictate whether the Yellow Jackets qualify for the HCAC Tournament.
