DC Tennis Downs Manchester in Conference Matchup
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Yellow Jacket men’s tennis team faced off against Manchester College in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference clash at the Dix Tennis Facility on Wednesday afternoon.
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Yellow Jacket men's tennis team faced off against Manchester College in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference clash at the Dix Tennis Facility on Wednesday afternoon. Defiance won in convincing fashion, finishing with a match score of 8-1.
The Purple and Gold jumped out to a quick 2-1 lead after doubles play finished. Senior Trevor Ault and freshman Ryan Nelson won easily with a score of 8-2 at the one position. Senior Austin Gray and freshman Justin Walker edged out Manchester at three doubles by a score of 8-6. This marked the second time in as many days that both the one and three doubles teams were victorious.
Defiance ran away with the match in singles play, as the Jackets swept all six positions, five of which were decided in straight sets. Ault set the tone with a quick 6-2, 6-0 win at one singles. The win is the senior's second straight and number 99 for Ault's career. Finishing soon after Ault were three singles player Cord Speelman and Craig Bills at the five position. Both were victorious with scores of 6-1, 6-2.
Other winners for DC were Austin Gray at two singles winning by a score of 7-5, 6-2, Ryan Nelson at four singles with a score of 6-3, 5-7, 10-2 (super-tiebreak score) and Justin Walker at the six spot by a final of 6-3, 7-5.
The win is Defiance's first HCAC win of the season and fifth overall. The Jackets will be back in action on Saturday, April 14 as DC travels to Central State. The match is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
