DC Suffers Defeat in First Two Matches of Spring Tennis Fest
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Defiance College men’s tennis team is competing at the Spring Tennis Fest on Hilton Head Island, S.C. for the week of spring break.
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Defiance College men's tennis team is competing at the Spring Tennis Fest on Hilton Head Island, S.C. for the week of spring break. The Yellow Jackets played their first two matches of the competition on Monday.
DC opened up play against Marietta. The Jackets were defeated by the Pioneers by a score of 5-4. Two victories for the Purple and Gold came from the number one doubles team consisting of senior Trevor Ault and Ryan Nelson, who also won his match at the number four singles position. In the number one singles and number three doubles matches, Marietta's Eric Sturgis was found to be ineligible and the two matches were forfeited to give the Jackets two more victories.
Nelson earned his first career singles and doubles victory in the match. At four singles the freshman won in straight sets by scores of 6-3, 7-5. In doubles, Nelson and Ault teamed up to win the eight-game pro-set by a final of 8-4.
In the second match of the day, the Yellow Jackets were overmatched by a tough Ohio Wesleyan squad. DC was defeated by a score of 9-0 in the match, and its record dropped to 0-4.
Defiance is back in action at the Spring Tennis Fest on Wednesday, March 12 at 9:00 a.m. when it plays against Salem St.
