Men’s Tennis Falls in Inaugural Home Indoor Match
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Yellow Jacket men’s tennis team played its first ever home indoor tennis match on Saturday afternoon against Franklin College.
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Yellow Jacket men's tennis team played its first ever home indoor tennis match on Saturday afternoon against Franklin College. The match also opened up Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play for Defiance. The Jackets were defeated by a score of 8-1.
The highlight of the match for DC was the performance turned in by number three singles player Cord Speelman. The sophomore won his match in straight sets over by defeating Justin Smith. Speelman narrowly claimed the first set in a tie-breaker and then went cruised to victory in the second set with a score of 6-1.
Junior Craig Bills also won his first set of singles play in a tiebreaker at the five singles spot. Bills took an early one set lead but was unable to hold on. Franklin's Evan Pierle rallied to defeat Bills by winning the second and third sets 6-4, 6-3 respectively.
DC was unable to get anything going in doubles play as the Grizzlies shut out the Jackets in all three matches.
The Yellow Jackets are next in action on their spring break trip to Hilton Head Island, S.C. DC will play six matches over the week. The first match is scheduled for Monday, March 12 against Marietta.
