WARSAW, Ind. – The Defiance College men's tennis team swept through doubles action and claimed a pair of quick singles victories to seal a 5-1 win over Manchester College on Wednesday afternoon. The victory clinched a spot for the Jackets in the upcoming Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Jackets avenged a 5-4 loss to the Spartans at the Dix Tennis Facility earlier this season by setting the tone in doubles competition. Defiance scored an 8-3 win behind Trevor Ault and Cord Speelman at the top doubles slot, and built the 3-0 cushion with a pair of 8-5 wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Wins by Ault at No. 1 singles and Austin Gray at No. 3 finished off the 5-1 triumph for the Purple and Gold, with Ramiro Arguijo securing Manchester's only point of the day at No. 4 singles. With the match decided, the remaining singles competitions were not completed.
DC (4-19) will now play the HCAC regular season champion in the first round of the 2011 HCAC Men's Tennis Tournament. The match with the No. 1 seed, which is yet to be determined, is slated to be played at 8:30 am on Saturday, April 30 at the West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The winner of Saturday's first round clash will advance to play against the No. 4 or No. 5 seed at 1:30 pm, with a trip to Sunday's 9:30 am HCAC Tournament Championship match on the line.
