Jackets end season with home loss to Lourdes

DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance Yellow Jackets looked to go out with a win in their final game of the season against the Lourdes University Gray Wolves on Wednesday but fell by a score of 5-1.

The Yellow Jackets (0-18-0, 0-12-0 WHAC) put up a tough fight against the Gray Wolves (9-6-3, 8-2-2 WHAC) applying consistent pressure throughout the game. The Gray Wolves, however, had a solid game plan with long passes through the back line which let them score on their first shot of the game. Lourdes held a 1-0 lead after a goal in the fifth minute but the score stood pat until the final two minutes before halftime.

The Turning Point 

The Gray Wolves went into halftime with a 2-0 lead showing promise, but the Yellow Jackets had numerous opportunities throughout the first half showing the game was not over. However just four minutes after half, Martin Coronel padded the Lourdes lead with a goal from outside the box to start putting the game out of reach. 

The Yellow Jackets tried mounting a comeback scoring one of their own in the 69th minute of the game with Anthony Tomaszewski finding the back of the net with Will Gehlhausen getting the assist. But Lourdes shut down the efforts with two consolation goals in the 78th and 83rd minutes. 

A Closer Look 

• Eight total cards were handed out between the two teams as they were scrappy with each other throughout the game. 
• Defiance failed to get in the win column this season and closed the season 0-18-0.
• After struggling to score during the start of conference play, the Yellow Jackets managed to score in each of their final seven games of the season.
• The goal by Anthony Tomaszewski was his third of the season, ending his freshman season tied for the team lead in scoring.
• Will Gehlausen's assist on Tomaszewski's goal was his second of the year to tie him for the team lead this season.
