Killam breaks career saves record, Yellow Jackets clinch HCAC Tournament berth with blowout win over Mt. St. Joseph
DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance College men's soccer team clinched a spot in the HCAC Tournament with an 8-0 victory over Mt. St. Joseph Wednesday afternoon at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field. Senior goalkeeper Orry Killam also broke the career saves record during today's game. The previous record was 423 and Killam currently has 425.
Mt. St. Joseph ends the year 2-15 overall and 1-8 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets finish the regular season 6-6-6 overall with a 3-2-4 mark in conference play.
The Yellow Jackets wasted no time with the scoring barrage in this one. In the fifth minute, Adam Tobin scored his first career goal and Armando Campos-Ortiz was credited with the assist. In the 11th minute, Riley Hensley scored his team-leading 11th goal of the year.
The Lions would record their first shot attempt in the fourth minute and it narrowly missed the inside left post. Louis Martinez Velez recorded their first shot on goal in the 21st minute and it was saved by Orry Killam.
Joshua Maurer would make it 5-0 as he scored two unassisted back-to-back goals in the 31st minute and again in the 34th minute. 24 seconds after Maurer's second goal, Will Gehlhausen found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Gehlhausen intercepted an MSJ pass from about 25 yards out and worked his way just inside the box for the goal from about 17 yards.
Jacob Saxby capped off the first half scoring with his first career goal and Will Gehlhausen was credited with the assist. The Yellow Jackets had a 23-5 shot advantage in the first half. The Yellow Jackets would take a 7-0 lead into halftime.
The second half settled down for a bit as the Yellow Jackets only netted one goal. Adam Tobin scored his second of the game in the 61st minute and Riley Hensley was credited with the assist. A total of 17 fouls were called in the second half and the only yellow card of the game was given to MSJ's Eric Slavey.
After blitzing Mt. St. Joseph with 23 shots in the first half, the Yellow Jackets recorded 11 shot attempts in the second half while the Lions recorded five shot attempts in each half.
Zach Canterbury made his season debut at goalkeeper and finished the final 18:30 while recording one save. Griffin Meyer and Armando Campos-Ortiz led the way with six shots apiece.
The Yellow Jackets will travel to Lexington, Ky. to play Transylvania in the HCAC quarterfinals on Saturday, October 28. Time is to be determined.
