DEFIANCE, OHIO - The Defiance men's soccer team started their season with an offensive bang on Friday evening. Playing host to Penn St.-Beaver as part of the 2018 Purple and Gold Classic, the Yellow Jackets won by a score of 7-1.
Defiance (1-0 overall) was off to a quick start, controlling much of the possession and pace of the game. After a grouping of chances, fans at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field had something to celebrate. A burst of speed from sophomore Milus Sutton (Cincinnati / Harrison) saw him in a one-on-one situation where he tucked away the first goal of the match. The home team didn't stop there, sophomore Maxwell Alvarado (Muncie, Ind. / Burris Labratory) scored off a through ball from sophomore Jarren Casto (Celina / Celina) in the 21st minute. Freshman Luca DeMartino (Mequon, Wisc. / Homestead) tallied one more for the Yellow Jackets in the first half, scoring in his collegiate debut.
The offensive power continued early in the second period for the Yellow Jackets. The Purple and Gold tucked away four more goals in the second half. Casto added to his stat sheet with a goal early in the half, followed by goals from sophomore Bennett Pack (Glasgow, Ky. / Glasgow), sophomore Cameron Brady (Carey / Upper Sandusky), and senior Christian Meister (Ontario / Ontario).
Defensively, sophomore Aden Gariety (Celina / Celina) and freshman Harrison Hirth (Lapeer, Mich. / Lapeer) split time in the net. Gariety tallied two saves in the first half, and Hirth contributed with three saves of his own.
The Yellow Jackets will look to continue their winning ways on Sunday, Sept. 2nd as they host Westminster in the final matchup of the Purple and Gold Classic. The match is slated to kickoff at 3:30 pm.
