Late Surge Lifts Men’s Soccer Past UC-Clermont

DEFIANCE, OHIO – The Defiance College men's soccer team used a late surge to defeat UC-Clermont in its home and season opener as part of the Purple and Gold Classic, 2-1.

Defiance (1-0) controlled play for much of the first half as the Yellow Jackets pelted the net recording 11 first half shots. Adam Ordel (Lima/Elida) delivered the first shot of the season, followed by shots from Quin McBreen (Cincinnati/Purcell Marian) and Jarren Casto (Celina). The Yellow Jackets continued on the charge as Jacob Carriveau (Clio, Mich.) and Milus Sutton (Cincinnati/Harrison) both recorded shots that were saved by UC-Clermont goal keeper, Jared Leyland.

In the second half, UC-Clermont wasted little time as they capitalize on a Jacket miscue in the 47th minute to claim the 1-0 advantage. The two teams continued to battle before Sutton delivered the Yellow Jacket equalizer in the 80th minute to tie the contest, 1-1.

With time running out, Defiance continued on the attack as Liam Hall (Oak Harbor) connected with Andrew Brown (Englewood/Northmont) for the golden goal in the 90th minute to claim the victory. The Yellow Jackets outshot the Cougars in the contest 25-9, 14 of which were on goal.

Clay Musgrave (Upper Sandusky) recorded the win in frame for Defiance making two saves through 90 minutes of work. Sutton led the Yellow Jacket offense with a game-high 5 shots and one goal.

The Yellow Jackets return to play on Sunday (Sept. 3) when they take on Bethany, W.Va. in their final game of the Purple and Gold Classic at the Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field. The game is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
