ANDERSON, IND.- The Defiance College men's soccer team traveled to Anderson, Ind. to take on Anderson (Ind.) University and battled the Ravens to a 0-0 double overtime tie in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action.
The Yellow Jackets (5-8-4, 2-3-3 HCAC) were unable to score off of six shot attempts in the first half, two being on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Clay Musgrave (Upper Sandusky) helped the Jacket's defense to keep the Ravens (8-8-1, 2-5-1 HCAC) from gaining the goal-ahead goal by stopping all three shots he faced in the period.
Freshman Ahmad Khalil (Hilliard/Hillard Bradley) and freshman Dante Mosley (Akron/Copley) recorded the two scoring attempts for DC, but both ended up in the hands of the Raven netminder. In addition, Khalil also added another shot attempt later in the half and junior Nick Kleptz (Troy) had two shots. Junior Christian Meister (Ontario) also produced one shot, but all shots missed their mark.
The teams headed into halftime with no score on the board.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets were attacking with shots, but could not find the back of the net. The offense took a total of 15 shots in the second 45 minutes of play, with three being on net. Khalil recorded two of those shot on goal attempts and freshman Jacob Diffenderfer-Gabbard (Troy) had the other. But again, the Anderson goalkeeper came up with the saves to keep the Jackets off the scoreboard.
Anderson also had three shots on goal in the half which resulted in three additional saves for Musgrave as the teams remained scoreless after regulation, sending the game into overtime tied at 0-0.
In the first overtime period, the Jackets produced the only shot attempts, including a scoring opportunity from senior Victor Trifiro (Akron/Walsh Jesuit) and Diffenderfer-Gabbard just before the end of the period. The Jacket defense did not allow the Ravens to take a shot in the first OT and the game went into a second extra frame.
In a reversal of the first OT, Anderson took eight shots total and outshot Defiance, 8-2, but would force Musgrave to make a play on only one of those shots with help from the Jacket defense that came up with several blocked attempts. DC managed two shots in the final 10 minutes, but both ended up going wide of the goal. The lone scoring attempt for either team came with 16 seconds to go off the foot of a Raven player, but Musgrave tallied his seventh save of the game as the contest ended in a scoreless tie.
Musgrave played the entire game in net for DC. With his seven saves, he now has 116 for the season, which leads the HCAC.
