DEFIANCE, OHIO- The Defiance College men's soccer team hosted Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest as part of Homecoming weekend, but were defeated by the Fightin' Engineers, 2-1.
Defiance (5-7-2, 2-2-1 HCAC) held the Rose-Hulman (9-5, 5-0 HCAC) offense from finding the back of the net until the 24:55 mark of the first half.
Freshman Mohamed Abdiraham (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrop) took the only shot for the Jacket offense in the opening period during the 39th minute, but it sailed wide, keeping DC off the scoreboard.
The lone Rose-Hulman goal would be the only point scored after 45 minutes of play as the two teams headed into intermission with the Jackets trailing, 1-0.
The second half saw DC get off six shots with one being on net when senior Brian Kurtz (Sandusky/Perkins) took a shot that ended up being stopped by the Rose-Hulman netminder.
With under a minute to go in the game, freshman Jacob Diffenderfer-Gabbard (Troy) scored a goal for the Jackets that was set up by a corner kick attempt by senior Victor Trifiro (Akron/Walsh Jesuit) to give the Jackets life, trailing by just a goal.
But time was not on DC's side as the clock ran out before the Jackets could get another shot on net, resulting in a 2-1 win for the Engineers.
Sophomore Clay Musgrave (Upper Sandusky) played the entire game in goal for Defiance and had six saves.
The Yellow Jackets will next host Manchester (Ind.) University on Wednesday, Oct. 15 in a HCAC matchup at the Winsper-Knobel Field. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
