LEXINGTON, KY. -- Freshman Jacob Diffenderfer-Gabbard (Troy) scored the only goal for the Defiance College men's soccer team as the Yellow Jackets lost, 3-1, to Transylvania (Ky.) University in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game in Lexington, Ky.
All three of Defiance's (4-6-2, 1-1 HCAC) shots in the first half were on net, but all three ended in a save for Transylvania (6-2-3, 1-1 HCAC). Senior Victor Trifiro (Akron/Walsh Jesuit) recorded two of the three shots and freshman Cody Sutter (Millbury/Lake) had the remaining shot on goal.
The game stayed deadlocked at 0-0 until late in the period when the Pioneers got an unassisted goal at the 43:55 minute mark. The goal was the final shot recorded by either team the rest of the way as Transylvania maintained its advantage at the break.
Transylvania continued to rack up the shots in the second half and added to its lead during the 55th minute to make the score 2-0. About 20 minutes later, the Pioneers struck again with their third, and what turned out to be their final goal of the game at the 73:45 mark, padding the lead to 3-0.
Defiance ended the possible shutout with under 10 minutes remaining when Diffenderfer-Gabbard got a shot past the Pioneer netminder to make the score 3-1. The goal would be the final score of the game as Transylvania went on to win by the two-goal margin.
Sophomore Clay Musgrave (Upper Sandusky) made his 12th start of the season in net for DC, playing all 90 minutes and had nine saves on 12 shots faced.
Defiance will begin a four-game homestand starting with a HCAC matchup against Earlham (Ind.) College on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
