DEFIANCE, OHIO - The Defiance College men's soccer team hosted Huntington (Ind.) University in a non-conference matchup at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field and got its first win of the season with a 1-0 victory against the Fosters.
In the first half, Huntington (1-5) outshot Defiance (1-2-1), 11-3, but neither team would find the back of the net. The Jacket defense blocked three of the Foster's 11 shots from reaching the net. With seven minutes remaining in the period, junior Nick Kleptz (Troy) wound up with a shot, just missing high. Junior Mark Williams (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) followed with a try of his own, but his attempt sailed wide. Williams recorded his second shot attempt with under a minute left before halftime which was saved by the Huntington goalkeeper and the teams headed into intermission tied at 0-0.
The second half of play started out in similar fashion to the first as the two defenses battled for possession of the ball. During the 64th minute of play, Kleptz was awarded a penalty shot, giving the Jackets an excellent opportunity at breaking the stalemate. Kleptz took advantage of the one-on-one opportunity and got his shot past the netminder to give DC a 1-0 lead. The goal turned out to be the only score of the game as the Foster's were held from scoring the equilizer and DC went on to post the 1-0 shutout.
Sophomore Clay Musgrave (Upper Sandusky) played all 90 minutes in net for Defiance. He allowed no goals for his first shutout of the season and recorded a total of 10 saves.
Defiance will travel to Chicago, Illinois for a pair of games next weekend beginning with a game against Moody (Ill.) Bible Institute on Friday, Sept. 16. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
