ANGOLA, IND.- The Defiance College men's soccer team traveled to Angola, Ind. to take on Trine University and battled the Thunder to a 1-1 double overtime tie thanks to a late goal by junior Nick Kleptz (Troy) in the final minutes of regulation.
The first half of play was a battle of the defenses, as both team's offenses struggled to open the gate with the game's first goal. Kleptz took the first shot for Defiance (0-2-1) seven minutes into the first half of play, missing wide. Freshmen Jacob Diffenderfer-Gabbard (Troy) and Amad Khalil (Hilliard/Hilliard Bradley) both took their try at scoring a goal, but both shots landed in the hands of the Trine (0-2-1) goalkeeper. Trine won the shot battle overall in the first period, 9-4, but neither team could find the back of the net and the score remained deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the locker rooms.
Trine finally broke the stalemate with a goal at the 53:51 mark of the second period to take the 1-0 lead. The deficit remained a goal for the Jackets until late in the half when Kletpz scored during the 82nd minute to even the game at 1-1. The goal was his first of the season. Trine tallied the final shot in the final minutes of regulation, but the shot went wide keeping that game even at a goal apiece after 90 minutes, forcing overtime.
The first overtime period would be a battle of the defenses. The Thunder recorded the only shots taken in the period, but neither ended up on net, sending the game into a second overtime.
During the second overtime period, DC outshot Trine, 2-1, with the Yellow Jacket's attempts coming off the feet of freshman Jarod Brossia (Curtice/Genoa) and Khalil. Trine's shot ended in a save for Defiance sophomore goalkeeper Clay Musgrave (Upper Sandusky) and the game would end in a 1-1 tie.
Musgrave played all 110 minutes in net for the Jackets. He allowed the lone goal and had five saves.
The Yellow Jackets will return to Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field to take on Huntington (Ind.) University in a non-conference matchup on Saturday, Sept. 10. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. in Defiance.
