DEFIANCE, OHIO- The Defiance College men's soccer team fell short in today's match up to Cleary (Mich.) University, 4-0, in the final game of the Purple and Gold Classic at Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field. 

In the first half of play, Cleary grabbed the early lead with a goal at the 14:33 mark to make the score, 1-0. Freshman Mohamed Abdiraham (Fort. Wayne, Ind./Northrop) tallied the first Yellow Jacket shot on goal during the 30th minute, but it landed in the hands of the Cougar goalkeeper.

Cleary then added to its lead with its second goal of the evening at the 30:14 mark to put DC in a 2-0 deficit.  The score remained the same after the first 45 minutes of play as the Cougars took a two-goal lead into the intermission. 

Junior Mark Williams (Plain City/Jonathan Alder) took the first shot of the second half for Defiance (0-2), but missed high. Cleary continued its offensive pressure and extended the margin with their third goal of the contest which came during the 47th minute making the score, 3-0. The Cougars tacked on what turned out to be their final score of the game at the 59:33 mark for a 4-0 advantage.

Defiance had a couple of scoring chances in the final minutes of regulation, but could not find its mark as Cleary went on to post the 4-0 shutout. 

Sophomore Clay Musgrave (Upper Sandusky) played all 90 minutes in net for Jackets. He allowed four goals against and had seven saves. 

The Jackets will travel to Angola, Ind. for a non-conference game against Trine (Ind.) University on Wednesday, Sept. 7.  The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
