DEFIANCE, OHIO - The Defiance College men's soccer team hosted Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe the College of Mount St. Joseph and lost to the Lions, 2-1 in double overtime.
Defiance (5-11-2, 3-3-1 HCAC) struck first when senior midfielder Drew Metz (Northwood/Lake) headed the ball past the MSJ (4-12-1, 2-4-1 HCAC) goalkeeper, off of an assist from sophomore midfielder Victor Trifiro (Akron/Walk Jesuit). The goal gave the Yellow Jackets the early 1-0 lead.
The Lions found the equalizer at the 26:22 minute mark and tied the score 1-1 going into halftime.
After intermission, the Yellow Jackets kept the pressure on the Lions defense. Freshman defender Nick Kleptz (Troy) had back-to-back shots, but came up empty-handed.
Freshman defender Michael O'Brien (Northville, Mich./Northville), freshman forward Anthony Ewing (Dayton/Northmont) and Metz all made attempts to take the lead, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Despite chances in the final minutes by both teams, neither team could net the game-winning goal, sending the contest into overtime.
In the first overtime, Defiance recorded the only two shots when junior defender Jordan Drake (Maumee/Springfield) had a shot that sailed wide and Kleptz had a shot that was on target, but saved. The game was deadlocked at 1-1, forcing a second overtime.
In the second overtime, Drake kept the pressure on the MSJ goalkeeper with the only shot recorded for Defiance, but the Lions held to keep the score 1-1.
The Lions weren't going to settle with a tie and within the last 17 seconds, scored the heartbreaking goal to seal the victory, 2-1.
In the net for Defiance, sophomore Damian Koester (Englewood/Brookville) played the entire game and recorded four saves.
The Purple and Gold return to action on Tuesday Oct. 28 when they travel to Richmond, Ind. to face Earlham (Ind.) College in a HCAC matchup. The game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
