Defiance Loses to Rose-Hulman (Ind.) in HCAC Opener

DEFIANCE, OHIO – The Defiance College men's soccer team opened up Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, hosting Rose-Hulman (Ind.)Institute of Technology and fell to the Fightin' Engineers, 2-1.

Rose-Hulman (6-3-2, 1-0 HCAC) struck first when they headed the ball into the back of the net off of a corner kick at the 20:37 mark, taking the lead 1-0.

The Yellow Jacket (2-9-1, 0-1 HCAC) offense tried to even the score when senior midfielder Drew Metz (Northwood/Lake) had a shot that sailed wide, keeping the deficit 1-0 going into halftime.

Within six minutes after intermission, Metz scored on a turnover which led to a solo breakaway attempt evening the score at 1-1.

Rose-Hulman was awarded a penalty kick at the 68:12 minute mark which proved to be good allowing the Fightin' Engineers to take the lead 2-1.

Defiance rallied back with attempts from both senior forward Ashten Forde (Euclid) and junior defender Blayne Robbins (Galva, Ill./Miamisburg) both sailing wide, ending the game 2-1 in the Fightin' Engineers favor.

In the net for the Yellow Jackets, sophomore goalie Damian Koester (Englewood/Brookville) ended the game with two saves and freshman forward Anthony Ewing (Dayton/Northmont) added one shot on goal to lead Defiance.

The Yellow Jackets return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 7 when they travel to North Manchester, Ind. to take on HCAC rival, Manchester (Ind.) University at 4 p.m.
