Defiance Comeback Falls Just Short at Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Defiance College men's soccer team saw its comeback bid fall just short in a 3-2 loss at Wilmington College on Saturday night. The loss drops the Jackets' record to 1-5 on the season.
The game opened up at a furious pace as three goals were scored within the first 20 minutes of the first half. Wilmington struck first as Martin Holmquist scored the opening goal in the sixth minute off a pass from Jeff Graham.
It took Defiance just under four minutes to answer with a goal of its own. The Yellow Jackets were awarded a penalty kick and Joseph Loftis scored the penalty to knot the game back up at one goal apiece.
Wilmington did not wait long to reclaim the lead, as Holmquist scored his second goal of the evening in the 18th minute off a header.
After Wilmington's second goal the scoring slowed down as Defiance went into the half down by a score of 2-1. Wilmington held a substantial advantage in first half shots by outshooting Defiance 18-5.
In the 63rd minute Wilmington added to its lead, as Taylor Estes scored from the top of the box to increase the Quakers lead to 3-1.
DC did not go quietly, as Joseph Loftis scored his second goal of the game in the 88th minute to draw it back within one goal. Defiance could not get the equalizing goal in the final two minutes and lost 3-2.
The Yellow Jackets are next in action on Wednesday, September 21 at 4:00 p.m. when they face Rochester College at Matthew Winsper-Knobel Memorial Field.
