DEFIANCE, Ohio – The men's soccer team finished on the losing end of a tightly contested game against Manchester College on Wednesday, and fell to seventh place in the HCAC with a 1-2-1 record against conference teams. Defiance was held scoreless by the Spartans, who escaped with a 1-0 victory.
The teams battled through 34 minutes of scoreless play before Manchester's Carson McFadden launched a pass from near the corner that found Corey Brueggemen in front of the goal for an easy header. Brueggemen's header gave Manchester a 1-0 advantage at the break, and it would prove to be the game winner after neither team could find the net in the second half.
Defiance outshot Manchester in the second half, but MC goalkeeper, Grant Noakes, added six saves to his conference-high saves total (104) to preserve the shutout.
Five different Yellow Jackets placed a shot on goal for Defiance, led by Tony Cornell, who recorded two shots on goal in the contest. Sean Roberts recorded three saves in the game, and remains second in the conference with 86 saves this season.
Defiance will travel to Transylvania this weekend for a matchup with the conference-leading Pioneers (8-2-2, 2-0-1 HCAC). The game is set to begin at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 16.
