Men’s golf wraps up season at HCAC Championships, Transylvania wins title
FLORENCE, Ind. – Defiance College golf finished the 2022-23 season at the 54-hole Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship at the Belterra Golf Club.
Transylvania captured the team championship with a three-day score of 906 (302, 304, 300), just 16 strokes over par for the tournament. On the individual front, Hanover's Dawson Long captured medalist honors after firing combined rounds for 217 (72, 71, 74) and just four over par for the weekend.
Defiance's Zach Canterbury (Tontogany, Ohio/Otsego) was DC's top finisher with a total of 290 (99, 93, 98) to close his sophomore season. Canterbury was the only Yellow Jacket to break 100 on all three days.
Seth Pearson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Northrup) placed right behind Canterbury with 310 total strokes after a final round of 110 and previous rounds of 107 and 93. Grant Johnson (Waynesville, Ohio/Waynesville) nearly missed beating his personal best round for the second day in a row with a round of 107 and finished at 325 (112, 106, 107) for the weekend. Payton Switzer (Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) bounced back from Saturday's 130 to get into the clubhouse after 122 swings on Sunday. He finished the tournament with 359 total strokes. Will Garlock (Lima, Ohio/Lima Central Catholic) wrapped up the weekend with a 120 and closed out the tournament at 369 (131, 118, 120).
As a team, Defiance compiled a team total of 1,270 (421, 414, 435) with Sunday being the highest total of the tournament after improving from day one to day two. Out of nine total HCAC programs competing, the Defiance placed ninth.
