GREENWOOD, Ind. – After an outstanding performance in Sunday's Defiance Fall Invitational held at the Eagle Rock Golf Club, DC's Mike Ross (Bryan, Ohio / Bryan) has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week for men's golf.
Ross, a senior on the Yellow Jacket squad, finished in a tie for fourth in Defiance College's home tournament for the fall semester. Ross fought through windy conditions to shoot a 74 (+3) on Eagle Rock's tough course to lead the Yellow Jackets in the one-day, 18-hole tournament. It was Ross' first top five finish since a third place finish in 2012 and only his second top five finish of his career at DC.
For the 2013 season, Ross has steadily improved in the season's first three events. Ross opened up the season with a 41st place finish overall at the Transylvania Invitational and took 8th overall two weeks ago at the Jon P. Spiess Memorial Tournament.
Ross is averaging a 75.5 in four rounds this season and has been DC's top finisher in all three events while placing an average finish of 17.67 overall.
This was the first time in two seasons that the DC golf team has notched a conference player of the week. The last player to receive the award was Matt Gehring in the 2011-12 season. Gehring won the award for the week of April 2-9.
Ross and the rest of the Defiance College golf team will be back in action this weekend when they travel to the Kenyon Invitational in Gambier, Ohio for a two-day tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28-29.
