NORTH BEND, Ohio – Defiance College saved its best for last and turned in its lowest total of the four-round HCAC Championship on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets carded a 338 on the final day of competition, improving by 18 strokes over Friday's score.
The 338 was the sixth-best team score on Saturday but was not enough to boost Defiance in the standings. DC ended the 72-hole championship with an eighth-place showing and a total team tally of 1,387.
The team championship went to Transylvania, (1,233) with Franklin (1,270), Mount St. Joseph (1,301), Anderson (1,303) and Rose-Hulman (1,305) filling the top five. Manchester finished in sixth with a 1,338 and Hanover ended in seventh at 1,364, with Defiance rounding out the field.
Transylvania also took the top two individual honors, with Bradley Sutherland carding a 305 to edge TU's James Dawson and Franklin's Eric Whitaker by four shots.
Jared James improved throughout the tournament and fired a 77 on Saturday to earn a top-20 finish by tying for 18th for Defiance. Jace Neal ended at 339 and in a tie for 24th position and Brian Jones came in 32nd with a 349. Matt Gehring (370) and Greg Vogt (396) ended in 35th and 37th.
