DEFIANCE, OHIO - The Defiance College men's basketball team played host to the Franklin Grizzlies on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets battled the Grizzlies late into the second half, eventually falling 87-75.
The defeat was highlighted by Tyler Andrew (Indianapolis, Ind. / Lawrence Central) dropping a career-high 25 points. The freshman went 11 of 16 (68.7%) from the field, while also knocking down a trio of shots from beyond the arc.
Andrew was joined in double-digit figures by Sean Tyson (Columbus / Centennial) with 17, Noah Goodrich (Oregon / Clay) with 13, and Jordan Maschino (Bradford / Covington) with 10 points.
Fans in attendance at the Karl H. Weaner Center were treated to a back-and-forth affair for much of the evening. Spending much of the first half trading blows, the Yellow Jackets found the lead with just over 10 mins on the clock. Devin Goodwyn (Detroit, Mich. / Chippewa Valley) grabbed a rebound, ran the court, and knocked down a three in transition to give DC the 23-20 advantage.
As time ran down in the first period of action, the Yellow Jackets held on for the last shot of the half. Andrew pulled up from beyond the arc as time expired. The shot could not quite fall as the teams headed to the locker room with the Grizzlies on top, 42-39.
The second half reported similar action as neither side could pull away to a large lead. The Grizzlies created the first breathing room of the contest as a 16-point run sparked a 74-59 lead.
DC continued to fight their way back, attempting to close the gap on the visitors. Another Andrew three had the score within 10 with just under a minute remaining. The Yellow Jackets were forced to begin sending the Grizzlies to the line, where the visitors remained efficient.
The loss drops Defiance's record to 2-17 overall, with an 0-11 mark in HCAC play. The Yellow Jackets will return to action Wednesday, Jan. 30 as they host Anderson at 7:30 pm.
