Yellow Jackets Routed by Area Rival ONU

ONU wasted no time in the contest, quickly jumping out to a 13-0 lead. Davontae Kinnie (Ft. Wayne, Ind. / Northside) found space for a jump shot with 14:29 on the clock to begin a six point run for Defiance. After Kinnie stepped to the charity stripe for one, Jack Galazka (Macomb, Mich. / Cardinal Mooney Catholic) hit a big three pointer to continue the offensive run.
DC cut the Polar Bear lead to four with just over 10 minutes on the clock. A stretch of ONU offensive power had the home side up 37-22 with 4:52 remaining in the half.
Head Coach Scott Cutter's Yellow Jackets headed to the locker room with a 50-28 deficit.
The second half saw similar success for the home side as the Polar Bears continued their offensive output with a five point run to start the half.
A handful of Malachi McClain (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) baskets, including a pull-up three pointer, cut the lead to 22 with 13:55 remaining in the contest. Defiance continued to battle through the deficit as Jordan Maschino (Bradford / Covington) fought through contact for and-one layup. The junior completed the three point play from the line.
As the clock ticked down DC continued to try to slow the Polar Bear offense. Mason Laube (Dewitt, Mich. / Dewitt) collected the ball in the corner and sunk a three-pointer with just over four minutes on the clock. The freshman's bucket gave him his fourth of the season, improving his 3-point % to 66.7.
McClain continued to add to his stat sheet with just 1:39 remaining, the freshman found himself on a fast break and put down the dunk to bring the score to 61-97.
One more Polar Bear layup gave the home side the final score of 99-61.
On the day the Yellow Jackets shot 32.8% (21/64) from the field, while hitting six shots from beyond the arc (24%). McClain led the way on the stat sheet, tallying 16 points and adding one rebound to his name.
Defensively, the Purple and Gold forced 13 turnovers during the contest, grabbing 16 points off said turnovers. Maschino led the way on the boards, reeling in 7 to bring his two-game season total to 14.
The loss brings Defiance's record to 0-2 on the young season. The Yellow Jackets are next in action Friday, Nov. 16 as they travel to Westminster (Pa.) to take on the Titans as part of the Westminster Tip-Off Classic. The game is set to begin at 8:00 pm.
