Earlham (1-13, 0-7 HCAC) scored the game's first basket, but would then go on a 5:49 scoring drought that allowed Defiance (7-7, 5-2 HCAC) to score 16 unanswered points which led to a 33-11 advantage at the 7:43 minute mark following a jumper by Alexander. The Yellow Jackets then suffered a scoring drought of their own which allowed the Quakers to score 11 straight points to narrow the gap to 33-22 with 3:24 remaining in the period.
Alexander ended the Earlham scoring run with a bucket, but DC saw its earlier lead fall to nine points, 35-26, on four straight Quaker free-throws making the score 35-26, with just over a minute to go before halftime. Back-to-back baskets by junior Michael Parker (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) and Alexander rounded out the scoring for DC and extended the margin back to double digits, 39-26.
Earlham tallied the final points of the period on a jumper to make the score 39-28 at the intermission.
Defiance began the second half with an 11-2 run that ended in a three-point play by Alexander and gave the Jackets their first 20-point lead of the game, 50-30, with 17:47 to go in the contest. DC maintained its double-digit lead the rest of the way as Earlham would get no closer than 13 points, 59-46, at the 9:02 mark.
The Yellow Jackets recorded their largest lead of the game of 28 points, 81-53, with 2:40 left to play thanks to a basket by sophomore Jonathan Ragland (Wilmette, Ill./Loyola Academy).
