Yellow Jackets climb to 4-4 with dominating second half at Manchester
NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Defiance Yellow Jackets exploded for 34 points in the second half to erase a halftime deficit and buried the Manchester Spartans, 51-27, in DC's final road game of the 2023 season.
The 51-point performance by the Yellow Jacket (4-4, 3-2 HCAC) offense is the most points scored in a game during head coach Bill Nickell's tenure and the best offensive output since defeating Earlham 59-28 on October 1, 2016. On the other end, the Spartans drop to 0-8 with five of those losses to HCAC opponents.
Despite trailing 21-10 after the first quarter, Defiance's defense intercepted Manchester quarterback Eric James three times over the first two quarters to stay within reach. Over the Spartans' first five possessions, they produced three touchdown drives and threw two picks deep in their own end. James evened out his three interceptions with three touchdown throws in the first frame, highlighted by a 44-yard strike to Duriel Moss Jr.
As for the Jackets, they took advantage of short fields following all three of those interceptions. DC resorted to a Zeke Sanchez field goal for the first points of the game, which was a season-long 36-yarder. That drive started from the Manchester 26 as a result of an interception by Tyquez Douglas on the game's first drive. Moments later with DC down 7-3, David Hunter got the ball back with an interception to start the offense at the Manchester 26 once again. Three Tyshaun Freeman rushes later, Defiance's bruising back was in the end zone for the first of his three scores on the day.
Manchester then went two-for-one on scoring drives to build their early lead. After the long touchdown pass to Moss, the Spartans recovered an onside kick as James led the team down the field for another passing score to take the 21-10 lead with just 16 seconds to spare in the first quarter. After a three-and-out by Defiance to start the second, the defense halted a long Manchester drive into the red zone to keep the game within two scores. Manchester got behind the sticks after a false start at DC's 26, then Richard Pope IV dropped the quarterback for a sack to back the Spartans up to 2nd and 19. After a couple of short passes to set up 4th and 1, Carlens Elisias broke up a James' pass to give Defiance the ball.
Defiance went three-and-out to punt the ball back to Manchester, then Thomas Coltrain got in on the turnover action with the Yellow Jackets' third interception of the half. The offense rewarded the defense's three big plays with a seven-play possession that ended in a nine-yard touchdown from Jordan Ambrose to Cole Recker, his first touchdown catch of the season. That gave Defiance some momentum going into the locker room trailing, 21-17.
After halftime, Defiance found its rhythm with the football and scored touchdowns on five straight possessions to begin the second half. The first and last of those scoring drives were long and sustained attacks of nine and 10 plays, respectively, and each for greater than 70 yards. Ambrose closed the first possession with a short, go-ahead rushing score. Douglas picked off James for the second time and fourth total by the Manchester signal caller, which led to Freeman's second score on the ground.
The Yellow Jackets' special teams delivered their third blocked punt of the season when Coty Johnson II knocked down an attempt by Manchester halfway through the third. Two plays later, Ambrose zipped a 17-yard touchdown pass to second-string quarterback Jehlani Warren, who was lined up wide to the left on the play.
Following the defense's third straight drive without allowing a first down, Ambrose used his legs and arm to get DC to the Manchester 25 and then went over the top to Shonjae Gibson for his third passing score of the afternoon. Manchester picked up their first first down of the second half late in the third period but still had to punt the ball back to the Jackets. On a drive that started just before the start of the fourth quarter, Ambrose completed passes of 36 yards to Jalen Warren and 24 yards to Tawann Rome that led to a one-yard rush into the end zone by Freeman to cap the 51-point day.
Defiance outgained the Spartans 490 to 323, including 300-74 during the second half. Ambrose was 20-for-29 passing for 271 yards and three touchdowns, plus rushed for one other score with 73 yards on the ground to highlight a turnover-free day. Freeman led the ground attack with 75 yards during his second three-touchdown game of the season. Saturday's performance brings the senior's rushing touchdown total up to 11 for the season, the most by a DC player since Von Cummings scored 11 times on the ground in 1991. Gibson was Ambrose's top target with five catches and his 79 yards were one-yard better than Jalen Warren's 78 on four grabs to lead the squad. On the defensive side, Douglas' two interceptions led a season-high four turnovers by the unit as Coltrain led the team with 11 tackles, 10 of which were solo stops.
With the win, Defiance finished the road slate 4-1 and are over .500 in the HCAC for the first time since 2016. The fourth win by the Jackets overall also surpasses last season's win total (3-7) as Defiance seeks the first winning season for the program since 2010 (6-4).
Defiance returns home next week to close up the 2023 season with back-to-back home games. Next Saturday's tilt will welcome Rose-Hulman, one of two remaining HCAC teams without a loss in conference play. Kickoff against the Fighting Engineers is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
