DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College and head football coach Brian Sheehan have announced the addition of Olmy Olmstead to the coaching staff. Olmstead will serve as the offensive line coach for the Yellow Jackets.
"Defiance College and the DC football family are fortunate to be able to welcome a coach with such passion, knowledge and experience," said Sheehan.
Olmstead comes to Defiance after spending the past three seasons on staff at Eastern Michigan University, where he helped build a championship mindset with the Eagles and saw EMU claim the Mid-American Conference's Michigan Championship in 2011.
Sheehan referenced that experience by saying, "Coach Olmstead's assistance in developing a championship mentality within the football program at Eastern Michigan will be a tremendous asset to our mission here at DC."
During his time at Eastern Michigan, Olmstead specialized with the offensive line from 2009 through 2011. In his final year with the program, Olmstead saw the Eagles rank 16th among all NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision programs in rushing yards with 218.3 per game.
Prior to his stint with EMU, Olmstead worked three seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Wilmington College, before remaining of staff and being promoted to assistant coach in 2007. During his four-year tenure with the Quakers, Olmstead worked primarily with running backs and tight ends, while serving as the special teams coordinator.
Olmstead got his first taste of the NCAA Division III level as a standout student-athlete at Wabash College, where he was a four-year letterman as a kicker, offensive lineman and fullback for the nationally ranked Little Giants.
The Granville, Ohio native rounded out his playing career on the gridiron as one of three kickers in Wabash history to successfully kick 100 extra points. Olmstead also holds the school record for converting nine extra points in a single game and his square-toe kicking shoe was placed on display at the NCAA Hall of Champions.
Olmstead graduated from Wabash in 2004 with a degree in history and went on to earn a master's degree in special education from Wilmington in 2008. Olmstead also completed doctoral studies in educational leadership, focusing on retention rates and academic services provided for student-athletes during his time at Eastern Michigan.
"I feel fortunate to be part of the Defiance College community and athletics department," stated Olmstead. "It is exciting to return to a NCAA Division III institution and have the opportunity to work with the type of student-athletes who are attracted to this level. I am ready to get started at DC."
Along with his duties on staff with the Purple and Gold, Olmstead will assist the director of retention as an academic support coordinator for Defiance College.
