ITHACA, N.Y. – Defiance College earned its second ESPN Academic All-District IV award of the fall season, as Ricky Sherrer was named ESPN Second-Team Academic All-District IV on the heels of Matt Johnson's Third-Team selection earlier this week.
The award is voted on and announced by the College of Sports Information Directors of America and recognizes the top student-athletes from around the nation for outstanding achievements in the classroom, as well as on the field or court of competition. To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher on a 4.0 scale, have reached sophomore academic status and participate in over half of the team's contests that season.
Sherrer boasts a 3.58 GPA and is on track to earn a degree in business administration from Defiance. The senior will also likely garner his third-straight Academic All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honor when the fall list is announced.
The Toledo, Ohio, native has been a steady contributor for the Yellow Jacket defense over the past three seasons, playing in every game during that span and earning three starts during DC's (5-3, 5-1 HCAC) resurgent 2010 campaign.
The ESPN Academic All-District awards to Sherrer and Johnson give Defiance more Academic All-District performers from the fall season that any other HCAC institution, with the exception of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
