Yellow Jackets face setback in WHAC doubleheader at Lourdes
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Defiance Yellow Jackets experienced a challenging day on the diamond during a WHAC doubleheader against the Lourdes Gray Wolves at Mercy Field on Saturday, falling 5-4 and 5-1.
The Yellow Jackets now stand at 10-22 overall and 2-10 in conference play while the Gray Wolves improved to 7-20 and 7-7 in league action.
Game 1: Lourdes 5, Defiance 4 (9 innings)
In the first game, the contest required extra innings despite the Jackets falling behind 4-0. DC responded to Lourdes' three-run fourth with a three-run fifth starting with an RBI knock by Mitchell Roever. Tim Bobek and Alex Rodriguez III chipped in RBIs later in the inning to pull Defiance within a run. The score held there until Tyler Dehan's leadoff triple in the seventh led to Bobek's second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to left. Each side threw zeroes on the board until Lourdes' Jackson Kennedy delivered a decisive walk-off homer in the bottom of the 9th inning.
Game 2: Lourdes 5, Defiance 1
The second game saw the Gray Wolves jump out to an early lead once again, powered by a three-run home run from Kennedy to end the rally. Gunner Gregg broke up Lourdes' shutout effort with an RBI single in the sixth frame. The Defiance bullpen, however, showcased some positivity. Tyler Sickmiller extended his scoreless streak to five games, and Donovan Armstrong added 2.2 scoreless innings. The Yellow Jackets' bullpen surrendered only one run across 8.1 innings of collective work.
