DC blanked at ONU on Wednesday
ADA, Ohio – For just the second time this season, the Defiance Yellow Jackets were held off the scoreboard as they suffered a 5-0 non-conference loss to the Ohio Northern Polar Bears at Wander Field on Wednesday.
Freshman left-hander Donovan Armstrong gave the Yellow Jackets a solid start of four innings and yielded just a solo homer in the second inning. The Polar Bears struck with single runs in the fifth and sixth against Aerion Gipson and Gavin Bragg, respectively, to build a 3-0 advantage. Bragg was lifted after three hitters including an RBI double while Jeffrey Varga escaped the inning and went on to pitch another scoreless inning. ONU tacked on two more in the eighth on a two-run homer to give them some extra breathing room near the end of the contest.
Ohio Northern used six pitchers to combine on the shutout, none of which pitched more than two innings as the unit combined for 13 strikeouts and one walk. Blake Peterson compiled five strikeouts in two scoreless innings to lead the Polar Bear pitching staff for the day.
The Yellow Jackets were held to four hits, including one from Connor Gephart to extend his on-base streak to 20 games. Kolbe VanderLeest also extended his on-base streak to a dozen consecutive games with a single in the eighth inning.
